This began as a fun, colorful abstract painting. I was again thinking of coral and oceans. I liked the yellow towards the center. It reminds me of Junebugs which reminds me of my dad. I felt it needed more black so I added the calligraphic ink, which is a nod to Japanese Sumi painting. Julie Mehretu is a painter I have admired for years and I can see her influence here as well.
